14 THE STORY OF MAGO GARDEN
IT WAS THE SUMMER OF 1996, and it had been about six months since I had come to Sedona. I was busy guiding meditation tour groups that came from Korea twice, sometimes three times a month. Despite my busy schedule, there was something I continued to focus upon. We needed an educational facility where the meditation tour groups that came from so far away could stay comfortably, and where we could develop leaders who could deliver the philosophy and principles of Tao. That’s why, for several months, I looked around in the Sedona area for a place that might work well as a meditation center. I kept myself moving and so busy that, even on days when a meditation tour was scheduled, I went out early in the morning or allotted part of my lunch hour to look at places; however, none of them fit the bill.
One morning I was at Bell Rock in deep meditation. When I meditated, it wasn’t unusual for me to see apparitions of people who had lived in the region many ages ago, including a myriad of entities in Native American guise. However, this day I was visited by a kindly-looking, elderly white gentleman with a soft smile. He did not say anything, but just gazed at me kindly.
Thinking little of it, I closed my eyes again and sank into deep awareness. Then he reappeared and approached me. Feeling that he wanted to speak, I said, “If you have something to say to me, please go ahead.” And he replied, “Welcome to Sedona. I am the spirit of a person who came here to teach people and build a community. I died only two years ago.”
As soon as he spoke, a whole new scene unfolded in front of me, a moving picture of a wide expanse of striking red earth dotted with small trees and shrubs. “I have a large area of land in the vicinity of Sedona that I have used as a spiritual training center. I know that the destiny of the land dictates that it become the place of a new spiritual awakening. I also know that the ultimate realization of this destiny is not with me, but with you. Please take this land and use it in accordance with its destiny.” The apparition faded quickly as the moving picture of the land dissolved into a brief glimpse of various people; then that, too, disappeared.
After coming down from Bell Rock, I resolved to find out if what the old man had said was true, and I headed to Sedona’s top Realtor. I gave him a rough description of the land that I had seen in meditation and asked if he knew of a retreat center in the area.
He replied that he certainly knew of such a place and that he was the real estate agent of record for that particular piece of property! We set out immediately and drove for about forty minutes from the center of
